L'Arche Spokane is part of an international organization headquartered in France, dedicated to creating group homes for people with developmental disabilities. The mission of L'Arche Spokane is to create and live Christian Community among people with developmental disabilities and those who assist them in their homes. The basis of life in the community is to witness Gospel values of Love, Faith, Hope, Peace, Simplicity of Life, Forgiveness, Celebration and Welcome. The community strives to nurture each member in all aspects of his or her life from daily living skills to relationships and Faith. The L'Arche community is comprised of 2 homes located near Gonzaga University in the Logan Neighborhood. There are 5 "core members" in each house with 6 full-time assistants, a director and bookkeeper. Funding for the homes comes from donations, private funding and some support through the State of Washington. The annual budget is approximately $250,000. Many of the residents hold jobs. In addition, by living in a residential setting, they become part of the community at large. Instead of becoming a drain on resources, they give back to the neighborhood as productive members of society. The need for a nurturing living environment for developmentally disabled adults is growing. It is estimated there are as many as 100 more people waiting for such an opportunity. The long-term goal of L'Arche Spokane is to create additional homes to meet the needs of these citizens. Current needs of the program include upgrading the facilities with carpeting, furniture and some electrical work. Perhaps more importantly, the community is constantly on the look-out for work opportunities for the "core members." Individuals who may be interested in opportunities to volunteer or to become live-in assistants may contact the the L'Arche office.
